I can't sign into Exchange hosting admin acct. I get asked for a verification code from an authenticator. But one was never set up. The login screen does not offer any other options.

    Hi @Richard Walton

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Based on the channel tag, it looks like you’re running into a multifactor authentication (MFA) issue with your Exchange Server account. Just to clarify, Exchange Server itself doesn’t provide MFA natively.

-In a pure on‑premises Exchange Server setup, MFA is usually enforced through AD FS or a third‑party identity provider. In that case, recovery has to be handled directly through that system, not Exchange.

-If your account is authenticating through Microsoft Entra ID (for example, Exchange Online or a hybrid environment), MFA is managed at the Entra ID level. In this scenario, a Global Administrator would need to reset your MFA registration.

If that applies to you, please reach out to one of your organization’s Global Administrators and ask them to follow this article: Manage authentication methods for Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication - Microsoft Entra ID |…

Once your organization IT team restores access, you can manage your own security verification methods by visiting the My Sign-Ins | Security Info | Microsoft.com page. This allows you to control which methods you use for MFA in the future.

    I hope this helps.

The sign-in is being blocked by multifactor authentication (MFA) that expects an authenticator method. When no authenticator or alternative method is set up and no other options are shown, access cannot be recovered self-service and must be reset by an administrator or Microsoft support.

Use the appropriate path based on the role:

    1. If this is a work/school (Microsoft 365/Exchange Online) admin account and there is another admin
      • Ask another Global/Exchange admin in the tenant to reset the MFA for this account in the Microsoft Entra admin center by:
        • Going to Users → All users → select the affected account → Authentication methods → “Require re-register multifactor authentication”.
      • After that, sign in again and register MFA from scratch (Authenticator, SMS, phone call, etc.).
    2. If this is a work/school account and there is no other admin (sole admin scenario)
      • This is a locked-admin scenario; MFA must be reset by Microsoft’s Data Protection team.
      • Call Microsoft support using the regional number from the Customer service phone numbers page referenced in the context and clearly state:
        • This is an Office 365/Exchange Online for business account.
        • It is a company (not education) tenant.
        • The caller is the only administrator and is locked out due to MFA/authenticator.
        • A service request is needed with the Data Protection team to reset MFA.
      • Be prepared to verify identity and tenant ownership as requested by support.
      • If unable to reach support directly, create a temporary trial Microsoft 365 tenant, sign in to its admin center, and open a support ticket from there requesting Data Protection help for the original tenant, as described in the referenced Q&A answers.
    3. If this is an end user (non-admin) account
      • Contact the organization’s IT administrator or help desk and request an MFA reset for the account. They can clear MFA settings so that MFA can be re-registered on next sign-in.
    4. If repeated attempts have already been made
      • Avoid repeated failed sign-ins or code requests; Microsoft Entra MFA can temporarily block sign-in after unusual or repeated attempts. If this has already happened, wait and then try again after the admin or Data Protection team has reset MFA.

There is no supported way to bypass MFA when it is enforced and no valid method is available; only an admin (or Microsoft support for a locked sole admin) can reset the MFA configuration.
