I am new to 365 and am particularly interested in getting signed in fully to Defender. I keep getting messages "web protection has been turned off" on my device and I should "turn it back on." I would like to turn it back on, but have yet to find the place to do so where it will stay on.

On Android, Defender web protection is controlled both by Android’s battery/background settings and by the Defender app itself. When battery optimization stops Defender in the background, Android removes the accessibility permission Defender needs, which turns web protection off again.

To keep web protection turned on and stay fully signed in/active:

    1. Make sure Defender is installed and signed in
      • Open the Microsoft Defender app on the device.
      • Sign in with the Microsoft account used for Microsoft 365.
    2. Change device battery/background settings so Defender can run continuously
      • Open Settings on the Android device.
      • Find Apps (or Apps & notifications) → locate Microsoft DefenderApp info.
      • Turn off any option like Pause activity if unused or Remove permissions if app is unused.
      • Open Battery or App battery usage for Microsoft Defender and set it to Unrestricted or No restrictions (wording varies by device).
      • In the main Battery settings on the device:
        • Turn off Adaptive Battery or similar optimization features.
        • Turn off Battery Saver, Power saving mode, or Ultra/Super power saving mode, or at least ensure Defender is excluded from these modes.
        • If there is a Background usage limits, Background power consumption management, or similar menu, add Microsoft Defender to Never sleeping apps / Don’t restrict background power usage.
The context provides specific examples (follow the one closest to the device brand/version):
      • Samsung (Android 13): App info → turn off Remove permissions if app is unused; set App battery usage to Unrestricted; in Battery and device careBatteryMore Battery Settings → turn off Adaptive Battery; then Background usage limits → add Defender to Never sleeping apps.
      • Pixel (Android 13): App info → turn off Pause activity if unused; set App battery usage to Unrestricted; in SettingsBatteryAdaptive Preferences → turn off Adaptive Battery.
      • OnePlus/Oppo, Motorola, Vivo, Xiaomi, Huawei: Similar steps—disable “pause if unused”/“remove permissions”, set Defender battery usage to Unrestricted/No restrictions, disable Battery Saver/Power saving modes, and ensure background usage is not restricted.
    3. Re‑enable web protection inside Defender
      • Open the Microsoft Defender app.
      • Tap the Device protection card or the web protection alert card.
      • Follow the on‑screen steps to turn Web protection on and grant any requested accessibility permission.

After these changes, Defender’s web protection should stay enabled and not turn off automatically, so the device remains fully protected while signed in.
