Conversations among multiple participants for collaboration and communication in Teams
In class teams, there are two different controls involved: muting students in the team (posts/channel + channel meeting chat) and controlling meeting audio/chat. The mute “tick boxes” only appear in specific places and conditions.
- Check where to find the mute tick boxes
The per‑student mute checkboxes are only available in class teams with 500 or fewer members:
- Go to Teams.
- On the class team tile, select More options … > Manage team.
- Open the Members tab.
- Under Mute students, use the checkbox next to each student to prevent them from commenting in that class team, or use the top checkbox to mute all students at once.
- Stop students posting in the channel (including channel meeting chat)
Use channel moderation to control who can post in the channel and its meeting chat:
- In Teams, go to the class team channel.
- Select More options … > Manage channel.
- Turn Channel moderation to On.
- Under Set channel moderation preferences, choose Only owners can post messages if the goal is to block students from posting in the channel and channel meeting chat.
- Optionally, add specific students as moderators if some should be allowed to post.
- Mute students during live meetings
During a meeting (including channel meetings):
- Open the Participants list.
- Select Mute all to mute everyone’s audio.
- Ensure students are attendees, not presenters.
- Next to Participants, select More options … > Don’t allow attendees to unmute to keep them muted.
- Limit chat use outside school time
To reduce or block student chat use in channel meetings outside school hours, combine:
- Channel moderation (Only owners can post messages) so students cannot post in the channel or channel meeting chat.
- Per‑student Mute students checkboxes in Manage team > Members to stop disruptive students from commenting in that class team.
