I am in a team meeting, and my mic is greyed out. How can I turn it back to be able to voice my contribution if need be?

    Dear @Anne Erdoo Madza,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum. I understand how frustrating it is to be in a meeting and unable to contribute because your microphone icon is greyed out. This usually happens in Microsoft Teams for Education for two main reasons: either the meeting organizer has disabled your mic, or there is a local permission/hardware issue.

I recommend you address this issue as follows:

Step 1: Check if the Meeting Organizer has "Muted" the Audience

In many Teams Education meetings, the teacher or organizer may have disabled microphones for all attendees to prevent background noise.

    •  Use the "Raise Hand" feature. Once the organizer sees your hand is raised, they can specifically "Allow Mic" for your account. You will then see the mic icon change from grey to active.

Step 2: Check Teams Device Settings

If other people can speak but your mic is still greyed out, Teams might not be recognizing your hardware:

    • Click the More icon at the top of your meeting window.
    • Select Settings > Device settings.
    • Ensure the correct microphone is selected in the dropdown menu. If it says "None," your headset or built-in mic may be disconnected.  User's image

Step 3: Check Windows/Mac Privacy Permissions

Sometimes your computer’s operating system blocks Teams from using the microphone:

    • Windows: Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone and ensure "Let desktop apps access your microphone" is turned On.  User's image
    • Mac: Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and ensure Microsoft Teams is checked.  User's image User's image User's image

Step 4: Browser Permissions (If using Teams on the Web)

If you are joining via a web browser:

    • Look at the address bar (where the URL is). Click the Lock icon or the Camera/Mic icon on the right side.
    • Ensure that Microphone access is set to "Allow" for the Teams website.

For more detailed troubleshooting, I recommend following this guide: My microphone isn't working in Microsoft Teams

I hope the above information is clear. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. Please let me know how it goes after trying the steps above. I’m here to help further if needed.

If the mic button is greyed out in a Teams meeting, there are two main possibilities: you are muted by meeting policy/organizer, or your device/mic access is blocked.

    Try these steps in order:

    1. Check if the organizer has disabled attendee mics
      • In large or education meetings, organizers can turn off Allow mic for attendees so attendees cannot unmute themselves.
      • If the mic icon is permanently greyed out and cannot be clicked, contact the meeting organizer/teacher and ask them to enable your mic or change your role to presenter. This is controlled in Meeting options under Participation where they can toggle Allow mic for attendees.
    2. Make sure you are not just muted locally
      • If the mic icon shows a line through it but is clickable (not greyed out), select Mic in the meeting controls to unmute.
      • Or use the shortcut Ctrl + Shift + M to toggle mute/unmute.
    3. Check Teams device settings
      • In Teams, select Settings and more > Settings > Devices.
      • Under Audio > Audio settings, make sure the correct device is selected in the Microphone dropdown.
      • Select Make a test call to confirm that the mic works.
    4. Check OS/app permissions for the mic
      • On Windows: go to Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone and ensure:
        • Microphone access is On.
        • Let apps access your microphone is On.
        • Microsoft Teams (work or school) is On.
        • Let desktop apps access your microphone is On.
      • On macOS/iOS or in a browser, ensure microphone permissions for Teams are allowed as described in the context.

If the device and permissions are correct but the mic remains greyed out only in that meeting, the organizer’s attendee settings are the most likely cause and must be changed by them.
