If your microphone is not working during a Teams meeting, it could be due to several reasons related to your device or software settings. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue:

    1. Check Microphone Availability: Ensure that your microphone is connected and recognized by your device. You can check this by accessing your device settings to see if the microphone is listed.
    2. Permissions: Make sure that Microsoft Teams has permission to access your microphone. You can check this in your device's privacy settings.
    3. Device Settings: Verify that the correct microphone is selected in Teams. Go to your Teams settings, navigate to the Devices section, and ensure that the right microphone is chosen.
    4. Restart Teams: Sometimes, simply restarting the Teams application can resolve audio issues.
    5. Check for Updates: Ensure that both your Teams application and operating system are up to date, as updates can fix bugs and improve functionality.
    6. Test with Other Applications: Try using your microphone with another application to see if the issue is specific to Teams or if it affects other software as well.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, it may be beneficial to consult the troubleshooting resources for audio issues in Teams.

    Hi @Darren Baker,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your concern. I tried to reproduce the microphone issue on my side but could not trigger it.

This symptom is commonly caused by microphone permissions, wrong input device selected, another app holding the mic, device routing issues, or Teams muting audio when it detects another Teams device nearby.

To resolve the issue, please follow these steps:

    1. Set microphone permissions at Windows level

Go to:  Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone

    Then:

    • Turn Microphone access > On
    • Turn Let apps access your microphone > On
    • Turn Let desktop apps access your microphone > On
    • Under the app list, ensure Microsoft Teams (work or school) is On

If all options are already enabled:

    • Turn them Off, then turn them On again to force a refresh
    • Close Teams completely (right-click the Teams icon in the system tray > Quit)
    • Reopen Teams

This reset is required for Teams desktop audio to function correctly.

    1. Force Teams to Rebind the Audio Device

If Teams keeps switching between the headset and the PC microphone, it often means the device binding inside Teams is corrupted.

    In Teams:

    • Select Settings and more (⋯) > Settings
    • Go to Devices
    • Under Audio settings:
      • Set Speaker > Your earphone.
      • Set Microphone > Your correct microphone.

    User's image

    • Select Make a test call and complete the recording

The test call forces Teams to rebuild the audio session, which frequently resolves the interruption behavior.

    1. Verify Windows Sound Input Selection

If Windows switches input devices while Teams is active, call audio may drop unexpectedly.

Go to:  Start > Settings > System > Sound

    Under Output:

    • Set your microphone as “Choose a device for speaking or recording”
    • Select the device > Click Start test

    User's image

    • Confirm Windows detects your voice

Teams can only operate reliably if Windows has a stable default input device configured.

    1. Contact Microsoft Support

If the issue persists after trying these steps, the best next step would be to have your IT administrator open a support ticket with Microsoft via the admin center. A technical support engineer can then initiate a remote session, review backend settings, and run diagnostics. If needed, they can escalate the case to specialized engineering teams who are well-equipped to perform advanced troubleshooting and provide targeted solutions.
