I just purchased a 365 and Office subscription. Had previously been using Office 2021. All files installed properly as best I can tell. Now I can open my previous 2021 files but can't edit them. How do I transition them to 365 so I can use them again without having to completely recreate them?

    Hi,

Please uninstall old Office setup entirely using Uninstall support tool, see https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/uninstall-office-from-a-pc-9dd49b83-264a-477a-8fcc-2fdf5dbf61d8

    Then install your Office 365.

To transition your Office 2021 files to Office 365 and ensure you can edit them, follow these steps:

    1. Check Subscription Activation: Make sure your Office 365 subscription is activated. You can do this by signing into your Microsoft account and verifying your subscription status.
    2. Open Files in Office 365: Since you mentioned that you can open your previous Office 2021 files, ensure that you are opening them in the Office 365 applications (like Word, Excel, etc.) that you installed with your subscription.
    3. Update Office Applications: After installing Office 365, run the applications and check for any updates. Go to Help > Check for Updates in the application menu. This ensures you have the latest features and fixes.
    4. File Compatibility: If you are still unable to edit the files, check if they are in a compatible format. Office 365 should support most formats used in Office 2021, but if the files are in an older format, consider saving them as the latest format (e.g., .docx for Word, .xlsx for Excel).
    5. Repair Office Installation: If the issue persists, you might want to repair your Office installation. Go to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, select your Office installation, and choose the repair option.

By following these steps, you should be able to edit your Office 2021 files in Office 365 without needing to recreate them.
