Is there a known compatibility issue between the latest Android 14 security update and the Microsoft Authentication Library (MSAL) used in Office Mobile apps?

I am experiencing a persistent synchronization failure across Office Mobile Apps (specifically Word and Excel) on Android 14. While the device has a stable internet connection and OneDrive is accessible via the web, the mobile apps fail to save changes to existing cloud documents or create new ones directly on OneDrive. This issue started appearing after the latest security patch.

The ULS logs on the mobile device (captured via ADB) indicate a failure in the OAuth2 token silent refresh process. When attempting a manual sync, the app triggers the following error:

Error Code: 0x8004de44
Message: "We can't connect to the server right now. Please try again later."
Component: Microsoft.Office.Persistence.Storage
Exception: ADALException: Failed to acquire token silently.

Is there a known compatibility issue between the latest Android 14 security update and the Microsoft Authentication Library (MSAL) used in Office Mobile apps?

I think Android 14 patches disrupt the silent token refresh in the Office apps and it is not really an MSAL compat issue, more the OS tightening background auth paths after the update.

a full sign‑out and adding the acct again has been the only steady way to restore sync. not ideal, but it’s the one fix that’s actually held up with this patch.

    Hi @Diermeier Lamaralus

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

There is currently no official Microsoft documentation confirming a direct compatibility issue between Android 14 security updates and MSAL used by Office mobile apps.

From my findings, this scenario may be related to the issue discussed in this thread White Screen in teams and outlook :: Android 14 with sept 2025 security patch - Microsoft Q&A. This points to a client-side WebView/authentication rendering issue rather than a OneDrive or service outage.

The following steps resolve the issue for many users:

-Update Android System WebView and Google Chrome

-Clear app data (not just cache) for Word/Excel/OneDrive

    -Reboot the device

-Sign in again to force a fresh interactive authentication

    If the issue persists:

    -Uninstall the Office apps

    -Reboot

    -Reinstall and reauthenticate

    I hope this helps.
