A family of Microsoft spreadsheet software with tools for analyzing, charting, and communicating data
Hi Alex
Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A Forum and sharing your experience.
I understand how disruptive this can be, especially when the functionality was working previously.
For Excel for the web, copy and paste behavior depends heavily on browser clipboard permissions and recent browser or service updates. If clipboard access is blocked or restricted, Excel Online may no longer be able to copy content outside the browser, even though Excel for desktop continues to work as expected. Microsoft has documented this behavior in the following article: Troubleshoot copy and paste errors in Office for the web
As a first step, please try:
- Checking the clipboard permissions for Excel Online in your browser and ensuring access is allowed.
- Testing in another supported browser or a private/incognito session to rule out browser extensions or cached settings. If you are using Safari, please try Chrome or Edge (or vice versa).
- Signing out and back into Microsoft 365, then reopening Excel Online.
- Also, are you using the right‑click menu or keyboard shortcuts to copy and paste? Excel for the web commonly restricts right‑click copy actions due to browser security updates. Please try using Command + C to copy and Command + V to paste instead.
Please let me know how things go on your side as your update can also assist others in the community who may be facing the same issue.
