Hello Clare Macleod (Student), thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum.

Are the file names themselves showing Chinese/garbled characters, or is the content inside the downloaded files in Chinese? Please try this fix:

    • Open Control Panel > Clock and Region > Region.
    • Go to the Administrative tab.
    • Under "Language for non-Unicode programs", click Change system locale.
    • Uncheck "Beta: Use Unicode UTF-8 for worldwide language support".
    • Click OK/Apply and restart your computer.

All set to UK, but I'll try and reboot my computer.

It sounds like your system's language settings may be set to Chinese, which could cause downloaded files or their names to appear in that language. Here are some steps you can take to change the display language on your Windows laptop:

    1. Change Language Settings:
      • Open the Control Panel.
      • Go to Clock, Language, and Region.
      • Click on Language.
      • If Chinese is set as the default language, you can add a new language (like English) and set it as the default.
    2. Install Language Packs: If the language pack for your preferred language is not installed, you can download it from the Windows website or through the Control Panel.
    3. Restart Your Computer: After changing the language settings, restart your computer to apply the changes.
    4. Check Regional Settings: Ensure that your regional settings are also set to your desired language to avoid any conflicts.

If you continue to experience issues, you may want to check the specific applications you are using to download files, as they may have their own language settings that need to be adjusted.
