Based on your description, you have an Excel file open but its window is not visible on the screen and cannot be maximized, even though it is running on your desktop.
Here are some suggestions you can try:
In case you just open Excel file and it is not visible, and the file is already saved try to end Excel tasks in Tasks Manager:
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc or right‑click the Taskbar > Task Manager, Then Find Microsoft Excel > Click End task (bottom‑right)
This completely closes Excel and clears the invisible window state. You can reopen the Excel file to check whether the issue still persists or not
Important note: Unsaved changes will be lost, unless AutoRecover kicks in (make sure your file was autosaved)
Try to reopen Excel file in safe mode
Press Windows + R > type:
excel /safe
