I got a 12 month Microsoft 365 Subscription that's already paid. It wont let me install it on my laptop, keeps coming up with payment verification failed error. I only have one card and its commonwealth and don't understand why it wont accept the card. The card is active and im unsure why its not working. I have already paid for the subscription from office works and it says it wont charge the card for another year but when i submit it all it comes up with that error.

Dear @Juliette Baradei,
Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum. I understand you purchased a 12‑month Microsoft 365 subscription from Officeworks (already paid), but when you try to redeem/install on your Windows laptop you see “payment verification failed,” even though it says you won’t be charged until next year.

To better assistance, could you please confirm following information:

  • Are you installing Microsoft 365 on Windows or another device?
  • Are you redeeming the subscription at https://www.microsoft365.com/setup, or during the installation process?
  • Are you signed in with a personal Microsoft account, or a work/school account?
  • Does your Commonwealth Bank card allow online payments and international transactions?
  • Have you seen any bank alerts or declined verification notifications?
  • Have you tried adding the payment method at account.microsoft.com > Services & subscriptions after signing in?
  • Is the billing name and address entered exactly the same as what your bank has on file?
  • What is the exact full error text (and any “CV:” code)?

In the meantime, you may try the following steps:

  • Try an InPrivate/Incognito browser window and retry.
  • Check in your Commonwealth Bank app that online and international payments are enabled
  • Redeem the product key first at https://www.microsoft365.com/setup, then install Microsoft 365
  • If available, try adding another payment method temporarily (you can turn off auto‑renew later)

Please understand that our initial response does not always resolve the issue immediately. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution.

I truly appreciate your patience and understanding. If you have any further questions or need further clarification, please feel free to reach out. I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

Thank you for your cooperation.

It sounds like you're experiencing a payment verification error when trying to install Microsoft 365. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot this issue:

  1. Check Your Subscription Status: Ensure that your Microsoft 365 subscription is active and that there are no issues with your account. You can verify this by signing into your Microsoft account and checking the subscription details.
  2. Update Microsoft 365: Make sure you have the latest version of Microsoft 365 installed. Open any Microsoft 365 app, go to File > Account, and select Update options > Update now.
  3. Sign Out and Sign Back In: Sometimes, signing out of your Microsoft account and signing back in can resolve activation issues. Open a Microsoft 365 app, select your name or profile picture, sign out, and then sign back in.
  4. Run as Administrator: Try running the Microsoft 365 app as an administrator. Right-click on the app from the Start menu and select Run as administrator.
  5. Check for Proxy or Firewall Issues: If you're behind a proxy server or firewall, it may be blocking the connection needed for verification. Ensure that your network settings allow access to the necessary Microsoft URLs.
  6. Contact Support: If the issue persists, consider reaching out to Microsoft support for further assistance. They can provide specific guidance based on your account and subscription status.

These steps should help you resolve the payment verification error you're encountering when installing Microsoft 365.
