I have an old computer tower running windows 8 Pro. When I turn it on it loads the page where it asks for my password. The page shows my name and my email address. I have tried my current Microsoft password and I have changed my Microsoft password. It asks for my last used password and I can not remember what that was. How can I get past this password to retrieve anything from this computer? Thanks in advance.

    Welcome REBECCA DIX,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum. I am sorry to hear about your issue when you want to Access your Windows 8 Pro computer without the old password.

You can try the steps below to troubleshoot the issue:

Option 1: Reset via Sticky Keys Method

Start by booting from a Windows 8 installation USB (you can create one on another PC using Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool). When the setup screen appears, press Shift + F10 to open the Command Prompt, then:

    • Run copy c:\windows\system32\sethc.exe c:\ to back up the Sticky Keys file.
    • Run copy c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe c:\windows\system32\sethc.exe to replace Sticky Keys with Command Prompt.
    • Restart the computer, and at the login screen, press Shift five times to launch Command Prompt.

    Next:

    • Type net user to display all accounts
    • Use net user YourUsername NewPassword (replace with your username/email and a new password) to reset the password

Finally, log in and restore the original Sticky Keys file by running copy c:\sethc.exe c:\windows\system32\sethc.exe

Note: Make sure to back up your data first and restore the Sticky Keys file after completing the process to avoid security risks.

    Option 2: Microsoft Account Option

    • If it's a Microsoft account, reset online at Recover your account on another device using recovery email/phone, wait 24 hours for sync, as old passwords may cache locally. You've tried this, so combine with drive removal if needed

The initial response might not address the problem. So, if your problem persists or you need any assistance, feel free to ask me by clicking "Add Comment" or "Add Answer" if you cannot add comment so your response will be visible. Thanks for your effort.
