"Untrusted" excel macro - but it's not untrusted and I'd like to have my laptop recognize that. How?

I regularly use an excel file that utilizes a macro. I've used it for years, and it still works for the rest of my team, but since I received a new laptop, I'm getting the error suggesting a security risk due to: "..because the source of this file is untrusted". But it's not untrusted. In fact, it's vital for our daily operational moves and is used 100s of times a week - for years.

I'm looking for a suggestion to make the below warning stop popping up. Can't find anything clear online and do not want to manipulate the actual file (again, vital to our business), but rather adjust my laptop to understand that this file is 'safe'.

    Hi @Jamie Scholten,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

According to your concern, your file is not verified as trusted/safe file in your new laptop, so Excel shows up the risk warning message. To enable macro for your file in the new device, you can try following the steps in this guidance:

1- Remove the Mark of the Web (MOTW)

    • Open File Explorer, navigate to your Excel file that you need to enable macros
    • Right click on it and choose Properties
    • In General tab, check the Unblock box for the Security option.

    • If the Unblock options is not available, it's usually because that your file is currently saved in a OneDrive or SharePoint folder and it will be considered as from the internet.
    • You can try moving the file to your local folder (like C:/ or desktop) and try the Unblock Security box again.

2- Add the file location as a trusted location

    • Open Excel and go to File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings

    • Select Trusted Locations in the left bane > Add new location > Browse and navigate to the folder where you keep the files need to enable macro
    • Press OK to close all the dialog boxes then try opening your macro-enabled excel file again

3- Adjust the trust center settings for macros

    • Go to File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings
    • Click Macro Settings and choose "Enable VBA macros" (only if you're 100% sure the file is safe)
    • Then click OK to save the settings
