Teams channel - sort files by last modified date not working

Hi all,

My colleague recently started using the "add columns" feature in our Teams channel, and it messed up the sort by date modified function. I would like to either reset all columns, or change "date" to "date modified" but I can't figure out how to do so. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks!Screenshot 2026-01-07 104937

    Dear @Julia,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum.
I’m thrilled to hear that the issue with the file sorting in your Teams channel has been resolved. I truly appreciate the effort you put into finding a solution, and I believe your experience will be helpful to many others who may encounter similar issues.

To make it easier for other forum members to find useful information, I’ve summarized your case and solution below:
    Issue Description:
You encountered an issue with the sorting of files in the Teams channel, where the Modified column was either hidden or replaced with a manual "Date" column. This disruption occurred due to a customization of the Files tab view, which impacted the default sorting behavior.

    Assessment:
The issue seems to have stemmed from the customization of the Teams view, which stored files in a SharePoint Document Library. This can cause the sorting and column settings to behave unexpectedly. By following the steps to restore the Modified column and reset the sorting, the user was able to resolve the issue.

    More Information:
Here’s a brief summary of the steps that helped resolve the issue:

    1.Restore the "Modified" Column:

    • Go to the Files tab in the Teams channel, select any column header, and choose Column settings > Show/hide columns.
    • Find Modified, check the box, and uncheck the unnecessary "Date" column.
    • Click Apply.

    2.Reset the Sort Order:

    • Click the Modified column header.
    • Select Newer to older to sort by date in descending order.
    • To save this as the default sort, click the All Documents dropdown (or current view name) in the top-right corner and choose Save view as.

    3.Force Sync from SharePoint:

    • If Teams doesn’t allow you to save the view or apply changes, click Open in SharePoint.
    • Make the necessary column and sorting adjustments there.
    • Any changes made in SharePoint will force Teams to sync and reset the view to the new settings.
