Teams and Class Notebook - unable to view notebook to remove students

I am trying to remove students from my class notebook that was set up in Teams. I have tried via the Teams app, via Teams online, via the Onenote app and via Onenote online. Nothing works.

When I choose 'Add or Remove Students' from the toolbar, it takes me to a page where it asks me to pick the notebook I'm using. The notebook is not in the list.

I can see the notebook if I chose 'manage notebooks'.

It is the top one with (Teams). Both the notebooks that say (Teams) are missing.

How do I remove students if I can't choose the notebook or Team to remove them from?

Hi @S Calow,

Thank you for your patience.

I currently don’t have access to an Education test environment, so I’d appreciate it if you could share the outcome after trying the steps below:

1.Open the SharePoint site for your Class Team

  • In Microsoft Teams, go to your Class Team.
  • Navigate to the Files tab.
  • Click Open in SharePoint to access the site.

2. Locate the Class Notebook folder

  • In SharePoint, go to Site Contents.
  • Open Site Assets (or Documents, depending on your setup).
  • Find the folder named Class Notebook.

3.Delete the folders for removed students

  • Select the folder(s) corresponding to the students who were removed from the Class Team.
  • Click Delete, then confirm the deletion.

4.Sync changes in OneNote

  • Open the Class Notebook in the OneNote app.
  • Perform a sync to ensure the changes are reflected.

This method has been confirmed to work for another user: Why doesn't removing a student in Teams remove them from Class notebook? - Microsoft Q&A

Could you review these steps and confirm if they match your environment?

If they don’t, the most reliable approach is to manually remove the students’ sections within the notebook.

For future classes, I recommend creating the Class Notebook directly from the OneNote app rather than through Teams, if possible. This method generally provides better control and flexibility for your situation.

Thank you for your time and effort!

The only way to solve this was to open Onenote on the desktop and delete each student individually. It took a few seconds for most of them to be deleted and sometimes, if there was a lot of work in the folders, it took longer and sometimes the student would appear again after being deleted. They did eventually go, but it took a long time and I had several hundred to do.

I think I have accidentally deleted a few students I shouldn't have too, which is going to be difficult to explain!

I'm really hoping that next time I need to delete students, I will be able to just delete them from the Team. This has been a nightmare and has taken a lot of hours to sort out.

    Hello @S Calow,

Good day! Thank you for posting your valuable question on the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Based on your information, I understand that You’re trying to remove students from a Class Notebook created in Microsoft Teams, but when you select “Add or Remove Students” in OneNote, the notebook doesn’t appear in the list, even though you can see it under Manage Notebooks.

This is expected behavior. Class Notebooks created through Teams are linked to the Team itself. Student access is managed via Teams, not through the OneNote “Add or Remove Students” tool. If you want to remove the student from Teams Class Notebook, you'll have to remove that student from your class team in Microsoft Teams.

You can find this information in Microsoft official instruction: Remove students in Class Notebook for OneNote - Microsoft Support User's image

Here's how you can Remove students from your class team:

    • Open Microsoft Teams and go to your Class Team.
    • Click More options (…) > Manage Team > Members.

    • Remove the student(s) from the Team by selecting the X next to that student .

    • This automatically removes their access to the Class Notebook.

For your reference: Remove students from a class team - Microsoft Support

Microsoft doesn’t currently allow you to keep a student in the Team but remove them from the linked Class Notebook. The notebook is tied to the Team membership, so permissions are inherited. If you need different access, I recommend creating a new notebook in the OneNote app and share it only with the intended students.

If you need further assistance or clarifications for these steps, please feel free to ask. Thank you for reaching out!
