Edge asking if I want to save before I leave the site - even though no changes were made.

Dear someone who can answer this.

My father is experiencing troubles with Edge on Win11. When he is playing his bridge game or just browsing around the internet, there pops up an alert that tells him that any unsaved changes can be lost - even though he has not made any changes. Edge should not act like this so what is there to do? I have uninstalled it twice and done the system cleaning by defender and the function in Windows that allows you to reset without losing any data. We are out of solutions.

    Thank you for sharing your question. I understand what's going on with your dad and Microsoft Edge on Windows 11. I get how annoying it is when that browser keeps popping up alerts about unsaved stuff when he hasn't even changed anything. I am here to help.

    I see he's already tried uninstalling Edge, cleaning up with Defender, and resetting Windows without deleting files. That's a lot of work!

    Basically, that alert comes from something called the 'beforeunload event'. Websites use it to warn you if you're about to leave a page with changes you haven't saved. Edge and other modern browsers can show this message if a site uses this event, even if there aren't any actual changes. Some games or interactive sites cause this on purpose, or it's because of scripts that think you're doing something. Edge doesn't cause this unless a site asks for it. The recent updates also changed how Edge deals with these events, so it's more like other Chromium browsers.

    Here are a few things he can try without having to reinstall Windows all over again:

    See if it only happens on some sites Try opening Edge in InPrivate mode or use a different browser. If the alert only shows up on certain sites (like that bridge game), the site's code is the problem, not Edge.

    Turn off extensions for a bit Sometimes, extensions can add scripts that trigger that beforeunload thing. Go to Settings > Extensions and switch them off to see if that helps.

    Wipe the cache and reset Edge Go to Settings > Reset settings > Restore settings to their default values. This gets rid of any leftover scripts or messed-up settings.

    Make sure Edge is up to date Go to Settings > About Microsoft Edge and make sure he's got the newest version. Some recent updates fixed problems like this.
