While trying to use the Microsoft Edge browser with a stored password, the request for a Primary Password pops up, this is normal. When I put in my Primary Password, which I definitely know is correct, the message authentication failed pops up. I see other people have asked this question and the only answer they have gotten is" are you talking about the Microsoft password," what is it an AI that answers these questions? One can't reset the Primary Password unless the computer recognizes the Primary Password as authentic, which it doesn't. Really not feeling like making a whole new account and new passwords for everything. Is it a glitch in MIcrosoft or a hacker? What can I do, what can you do?

If you are experiencing issues with the Primary Password in Microsoft Edge, it could be due to a few reasons. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the problem:

    1. Check for Updates: Ensure that your Microsoft Edge browser is up to date. Sometimes, bugs are fixed in newer versions.
    2. Clear Cache and Cookies: Sometimes, corrupted cache or cookies can cause issues. Try clearing them and see if that resolves the problem.
    3. Disable Extensions: Some browser extensions might interfere with the password manager. Try disabling them temporarily to see if it helps.
    4. Check for Malware: If you suspect a security issue, run a malware scan on your computer to ensure that no malicious software is affecting your browser.
    5. Reset Edge Settings: If the problem persists, you might consider resetting Microsoft Edge to its default settings. This can resolve various issues but will also remove your custom settings.
    6. Contact Support: If none of the above solutions work, consider reaching out to Microsoft Support for further assistance.

Unfortunately, if you cannot recover your Primary Password, you may need to reset your passwords or create a new account as a last resort.

    Hi,

Thanks for reaching out to the Microsoft community and explaining what’s going on. After looking into it, this issue with Microsoft Edge’s Primary Password failing authentication, even when you’re sure it’s correct, has been reported by other users as well, like in this thread: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/5607760/unable-to-reset-primary-password-as-forgotten. It appears to be a bug rather than a hacker attack.

The Primary Password in Edge is designed for security, so if the browser doesn’t accept it, you can’t reset it without entering the current password. That’s intentional to protect your stored credentials. Unfortunately, this glitch has caused problems for many users whose passwords suddenly stopped working without any changes on their part.

Here’s what you can try for now: make sure Edge is updated to the latest version by going to Settings > About Microsoft Edge, since updates often fix bugs. Clear your cache and cookies using edge://settings/clearBrowserData and temporarily disable any extensions that might interfere with the password manager. It’s also a good idea to run a malware scan just to rule out anything suspicious. If none of that works, you can reset Edge to its default settings at edge://settings/reset, which removes custom settings but may resolve the issue.

If you still can’t authenticate, export your saved passwords before resetting the Primary Password. Go to edge://settings/passwords, click the three dots next to your saved passwords, and choose Export passwords. You’ll need your Windows login credentials to do this.

Save the file securely, like in OneDrive Personal Vault or on a USB drive. After that, you can reset the Primary Password by going to Manage Primary Password and selecting Forgot. You’ll lose access to previously saved passwords in Edge, but you’ll be able to set a new one.

Hope this helps! Let me know how it goes.

    Kind regards,

    Edward
