I just got a new laptop for work. I added my profile on the laptop and got everything set up with user name and password. I just added Windows 11 Pro and installed and updated it. My computer restarted and now it doesn't recognize the password I set up for it. I tried my Microsoft account password and it doesn't work. HELP! I need to get into this thing and get working.

If your new laptop with Windows 11 Pro is not recognizing the password you set up, here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue:

    1. Check for Typing Errors: Ensure that you are entering the password correctly. Pay attention to the keyboard layout and ensure that Caps Lock is not enabled.
    2. Use the Microsoft Account Password: If you set up your laptop using a Microsoft account, try using the Microsoft account password instead of the local account password. Make sure you are connected to the internet when doing this.
    3. Reset Password: If you are unable to log in, you can reset your Microsoft account password online. Visit the Microsoft account recovery page and follow the instructions to reset your password.
    4. Access Recovery Options: If you still cannot access your laptop, you may need to use the recovery options available in Windows. You can access these by restarting your laptop and pressing the appropriate key (often F8, F11, or Esc) during boot to enter recovery mode. From there, you can try to reset your PC or access advanced options.
    5. Contact Support: If none of the above steps work, consider reaching out to Microsoft Support for further assistance.

These steps should help you regain access to your laptop so you can start working again.

    Hello Josh Pew,

Getting locked out of a brand‑new laptop is frustrating, but the issue usually comes down to how the account was set up, and there are reliable ways to get back in. If you created a local account, the password is stored only on the device and won’t match your Microsoft account password. If you linked a Microsoft account, Windows will expect your most recent online password, and sometimes cached credentials fail after updates or restarts.

To fix this, first check whether your login is a local account or Microsoft account (on the sign‑in screen, an email address means Microsoft account). If you set up a PIN, try that—it often works even when the password doesn’t. For Microsoft accounts, reset your password online or use the “Forgot password” option on the login screen. For local accounts, you may need to reset through Safe Mode or ask your IT administrator if it’s a work‑managed device.

The best next step is to confirm which type of account you set up, then reset the password accordingly. Once you’re back in, consider linking your profile to a Microsoft account if it isn’t already—this makes recovery much easier in the future.
