    Hello Kathleen,

That's not a technical error, it's a licensing one. The activation key (a MAK key, based on your "Windows for business" tag) has been used too many times and has exceeded its activation limit. This was triggered by the SSD change because the system now sees itself as new hardware. So sorry, you cannot fix this yourself.

Only your IT Administrator can solve this. They must either:

Contact Microsoft's Volume Licensing Center to increase the key's limit.

Provide you with a new, valid activation key.

Please contact your IT department for help.

    Hello Kathleen!

When facing a Windows activation error code like 0xC004C020 after a hardware change such as upgrading your SSD, it generally means that the product key or digital license is already tied to a different hardware signature, suggesting the activation limit has been reached. This error often occurs when a significant component is replaced, as Windows thinks you've installed it on a new PC.

    Understanding Error 0xC004C020

The code 0xC004C020 indicates the "Maximum Activation Limit Reached". Windows links its license to your hardware profile. Replacing a major component like the SSD changes this profile, which is why the activation fails.

Two Steps to Fix the Activation Issue

The solution involves telling Microsoft's activation servers that the new hardware is still the same computer. The process depends on whether your Windows license is a Digital License linked to your Microsoft Account or a traditional Product Key.

Use the Windows Activation Troubleshooter (Recommended First Step)

If your license is a Digital License linked to your Microsoft Account (MSA), this is the easiest fix:

Go to Settings, then navigate to System, and select Activation.

Look for the Troubleshoot link or button and click it.

Once the troubleshooter runs, select the option that says "I changed hardware on this device recently."

You may be prompted to sign in with your Microsoft Account if you haven't already.

From the list of linked devices, choose the PC you are currently using and click Activate.

This should transfer your existing digital license to the new SSD/hardware configuration.

Use Phone Activation (If the Troubleshooter Fails)

If you have an older Retail product key or an OEM (pre-installed) key, or if the troubleshooter doesn't work, you'll need to use the automated phone system:

Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog. Type slui 4 (that's the number 4) and press Enter.

A window will open. Select your country or region.

The screen will display a toll-free number for the Microsoft Activation Center and your Installation ID (a long string of numbers).

Call the number and follow the prompts from the automated system, which will ask you to enter the Installation ID.

If the license is valid, the system will give you a Confirmation ID in return.

Enter this Confirmation ID back into the slui 4 window to complete the activation process.

The automated phone system is designed specifically to handle license transfers after major hardware changes.
