A family of Microsoft word processing software products for creating web, email, and print documents.
Hi @MunyaJ,
Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.
I can see that you’re facing multiple issues in Word for iPad (crash when deleting the first character in a line, external mouse not selecting text, and Format Painter not working). Could you please answer some questions to narrow this down first:
1/ Are you signed in with a work/school (Microsoft 365 for business) account or a personal Microsoft account?
2/ Which license do you have (e.g., Microsoft 365 Business Standard, E3/E5)?
This is important because some licenses or expired subscriptions can put Word into view-only mode, which disables editing features like Format Painter and may affect selection.
You can check it by login to: https://portal.office.com/account/?ref=Harmony#subscriptions > look under Licenses
3/ You mentioned iPadOS 26.1, can you please confirm the exact number? You can see it in Settings > General > About.
Also, can you tell us your Word version & build? You can see it in Word > Settings > About.
4/ Does the crash happen in all documents or just one?
5/ What is your external mouse brand/model?
6/ Where is the file stored (OneDrive, SharePoint, or local)?
While we're waiting for your answer to the questions above, here are a few steps that you could try right away:
- Update Word and iPadOS, then restart the iPad.
- Turn off Autoformat features: Word > Settings > Under Word Settings turn off Autoformat As You Type.
- Test in a new blank .docx file.
- If still crashing, reinstall Word.
- For mouse issues: check Pointer Control in iPad settings and re-pair the mouse.
- For Format Painter: confirm the file is editable and saved as .docx.
Please understand that our initial response does not always resolve the issue immediately. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution.
