We have deployed Windows 24H2 update to Lenovo laptop client systems (Windows 10 22H2). On about 8 - 10 % of the client devices the update did not install but has caused client systems to go into a Lopp of Power on - Dispaly Lenovo Logo - power off and then cycle again through thsi sequence as infinitum (Never reaching a Windows Reapir screen). Only resolution was to boot to USB Media Creation Tool created boot disk, format the system partition and use bcdboot c:\windows /s System_Drive_Letter /f all to restore boot capability. Then restart Services in Windows that had been disbaled. Does anyone know what 24H2 is doing to cause this issue. I would not have though a Feature update would affect the system\boot files on the system partition.

    Hi Graham Duffy,

Based on your description, the issue likely stems from firmware-level or storage driver incompatibility that affects how Windows Setup handles the boot configuration data (BCD) during the feature update.

In several cases we’ve reviewed, similar symptoms appeared on specific Lenovo systems where outdated BIOS, Intel RST/SSD drivers, or Secure Boot configurations conflicted with the new boot environment introduced in 24H2. I recommend updating affected machines to the latest BIOS/UEFI version and ensuring the Intel Rapid Storage Technology (IRST) driver is current before reattempting deployment.

You can also test re-running the upgrade using the Windows 11 Installation Assistant or executing the setup with the /DynamicUpdate disable flag to prevent incompatible driver injection during setup. This often prevents the boot configuration from being rewritten incorrectly.

If the issue persists, please collect the setuperr.log and setupact.log from the $WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther folder after recovery, these will help pinpoint the stage where boot files were affected.

I appreciate your detailed recovery steps; they’re absolutely on point. If this explanation helps clarify the cause and next steps, please click “Accept Answer” so others with the same issue can benefit too 😊.

Systems had an up to date BIOS. Secure boot was set. Where would we check\obtain the latest Intel RST/SSD drivers - from Lenovo site on Intel site ?

How would we go about re-running the upgrade using the Windows 11 Installation Assistant or executing the setup with the /DynamicUpdate disable flag to prevent incompatible driver injection during setup ?

How can the Windows Assistant be used, and does use of some switches such as /dynamicupdate disable not potentially cause failure itself https://community.spiceworks.com/t/auto-upgrade-from-23h2-to-24h2-fails-using-command-line-switches/1228568/4
