OneNote on Android. Click on phone number hyperlinks does not open the dialer.

In my OneNote on my computer, I have made phone numbers and emails addresses into hyperlinks. On the computer, email hyperlinks open an Outlook email draft. Phone number links do nothing on the computer as I expected since it is not a phone. However, on the OneNote phone app on my Android, neither link opens the desired app to perform the task, the phone or Outlook. All I get is a pop-up with options to cut, copy, select all, etc. How do I get my links on the phone app to open the desired functions?

    Dear @Nobles Mark,

Thank you again for reaching out and for keeping me updated on your situation.

After consulting with my team and testing across various Android devices and OS versions, I’ve discovered an additional workaround that may be helpful.

On Android versions below 13, when entering a full email address into the latest version of OneNote, the app does not automatically convert it into a clickable link that opens in Outlook or other email apps.

However, this functionality works as expected on Android 14 and 15.

    • Given this, could you please check the Android version of your company device? You can do this by going to: Settings > About phone > Software information. Then look for the Android version listed there.

If your device is running Android 13, you can try manually adding the email link using the format “mailto:full email address”.

You mentioned trying this step earlier, but I’m not sure if the link was entered exactly in this format. I sincerely apologize for the earlier oversight and truly appreciate your patience and collaboration as we work through this.

    Dear @Nobles Mark

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

I understand how inconvenient it must be when tapping on phone numbers or email links in OneNote on your Android device doesn’t launch the appropriate app as expected.

On mobile devices, OneNote automatically converts email addresses into clickable links, allowing you to tap and open them.

When you tap once or twice on the email address, a pop-up menu will appear. From there, tap the icon to choose your preferred email app. You can select Outlook and choose the “Always” option to make it your default, so future email links will open directly in Outlook.

Unfortunately, phone numbers are not converted into hyperlinks, so tapping them won’t launch the dialer and will only display basic text options like cut, copy, or select all. The best workaround is to copy the number and paste it into your dialer.

Thank you for raising such a thoughtful question. It has helped highlight the current limitations in OneNote, especially when it comes to handling phone numbers on Android devices.
