I had to add one student to my MS Teams team later. He is in the team, but has no access to the class notebook. How can he gain access to the class notebook?

I have tried all the obvious possibilities to add the student to the class notebook. However, for whatever reason, my class notebooks also do not show in the mange students browser window. Is that because I created them with MS Teams?

User's image The class notebooks do show up when I click on manage notebooks.

Please help!

    Hi Michelle-N!

I tried the option you recommended in the very beginning, before I addressed this forum. That is my whole dilemma. Because this is the usual way I do it and it has never caused any trouble. But now, for some reason, it doesn't work.

    Sincerely

    Hi @Yvonne Flach

Thank you so much for contacting Microsoft Q&A Forum.

Based on your description, I understand your situation: You added a student to your Class Team, but they did not automatically get access to the Class Notebook. When you tried to add them manually using the OneNote 'Manage Students' webpage, your notebook isn't listed, and you're guessing this is because you created the notebook from within Teams.

I have tested this on my own environment, and I understand the situation you're in.

I also created a Class Team on Teams, which in turn created a Class Notebook. Just as you experienced, that notebook did not appear in the main 'Manage Students' web app. After researching, it appears that notebooks created from within Teams function and are managed differently than notebooks created directly from the OneNote Class Notebook web app.

The "Manage Students" website you were using can only add students to notebooks that were originally created on that website.

To add your new student to the Teams-created notebook, you must do it from within Teams itself. Here is how:

    • On the left side of Teams, find your Class Teams > Click the ... (More options) button right next to your team's name > From the dropdown menu that appears, select "Add member" > A new window will open, allowing you to search for the student by name or email and add them to the team.

Once you add the student to the team using this method, they should automatically get access to the Class Notebook. Please ask your student to try using Teams on the web and see if they can access the Class Notebook.

After you have added them using this tool, please ask the student to check again if they can see the notebook in Teams. If they still cannot, could you please provide a screenshot of the error message they receive?
