How can I get video to turn off on Teams Reading Progress assignments and keep the microphones on on ipad?

I completely understand you’re experiencing with Reading Progress on iPad. And you did the right things already by allowing video to be turned off in your Reading Progress assignment.

However, on iPad, the Reading Progress start screen in the Teams app currently links the camera and microphone controls. As a result, when students toggle video off at that screen, the microphone is also disabled and the Start button appears unavailable. This is expected behavior in the current iOS client (by design), it isn’t caused by your assignment settings or a permission error.

In this case, I recommend you try open the Reading Progress assignment in web-browser (Safari) instead of the Teams app. Safari typically allows audio‑only recording on iPad even when the in‑app start screen couples mic + camera.

Note: Reading Progress might not be fully supported on all browsers. Please try using the latest version of Safari on your iPad, as it is the default browser. Double-check that the camera and microphone permissions are enabled for the Edge browser. Go to your iPad's Settings > Camera/Microphone and ensure that it has the necessary permissions.

In this case, I absolutely agree that allowing students to record audio‑only on iPad, microphone on while video is off, is important for privacy, accessibility, and reducing camera anxiety. Many classrooms prefer this option so learners can focus on fluency without being on camera. I highly encourage you to share feedback directly with the Microsoft product team so this improvement can be prioritized.

If enough users raise ticket for the same idea, Microsoft may consider adding this feature in the future.
