Additional Class Notebook-related features and issues within Microsoft Teams for Education
Hi @Heather Peake,
Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.
The behavior you're seeing where a student's Teams page refreshes unexpectedly and causes their Class Notebook work to disappear which is a known issue with several contributing factors.
This issue is typically caused by a combination of Teams desktop app instability (including refreshes or crashes), delayed OneNote syncing due to large edits or connectivity drops, brief internet interruptions that trigger reloads, and outdated or corrupted local cache, all of which can result in unsaved Class Notebook content being lost.
In order to prevent this, you may try these steps below:
- Use the OneNote desktop app
- Encourage students to open Class Notebooks in the full OneNote client using the “Open in OneNote” button in Teams.
- This ensures continuous sync and local caching of changes.
- Ensure stable internet connections
- Use wired connections where possible.
- Avoid running network-intensive tasks concurrently on Wi-Fi.
- Periodically trigger manual sync or save in OneNote.
- Monitor sync status
- In OneNote: Go to File > Info > View Sync Status.
- Clear teams cache
- Quit Teams and delete the following folders:
- %appdata%\Microsoft\Teams\Cache
- %appdata%\Microsoft\Teams\Code Cache
- %appdata%\Microsoft\Teams\GPUCache
- For the full guide, please refer to this article: Clear the Teams client cache - Microsoft Teams | Microsoft Learn
- Keep software updated
- Ensure the latest versions of Teams and OneNote are installed.
- Use the web version of Teams if desktop issues persist.
