Sync student work

For a class I sync the individual assigned work. Some assignements are group assignments. Unfortunately sharepoint syncs them in folder with a generated name that is not very descriptive. How can one change the name of the local folders?

Hi @Johannes Kingma,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

I understand your concern regarding the non-descriptive folder names generated when syncing Teams class assignments via SharePoint. Unfortunately, these folder names are automatically created based on the SharePoint site structure and cannot be renamed locally without breaking the sync connection. Renaming them manually will disrupt the link between your local files and the Teams/SharePoint source.

As an alternative, instead of syncing the entire folder, you can create a shortcut to a specific assignment folder by selecting “Add shortcut to OneDrive” in SharePoint. After adding the shortcut, sync your OneDrive client. In File Explorer, the shortcut will appear under “OneDrive – [Your Organization Name]”, allowing quick access without the long folder names.

You can find more details here: Add shortcuts to shared folders in OneDrive - Microsoft Support

While the naming convention may not be ideal, it helps maintain the integrity of the sync process and avoids conflicts between similarly named folders across different classes or assignments.

Please note that this is a built-in product behavior, and as a forum moderator, I hope you understand that I don’t have the ability to modify or escalate product issues directly. That said, I do hope the information above helps clarify your situation.

If you have any further questions, feel free to leave a comment below this post. I’ll be happy to assist you.

Thank you for your valuable time!
