    Hi trackhawk,

Yes, you can purchase a retail Windows 10 Pro license and use it to upgrade your existing OEM Windows 10 installation. Once upgraded, that retail license becomes the active entitlement on the machine. Unlike OEM licenses, which are tied to the original hardware, retail licenses are transferable, meaning you can later migrate that license to a new machine, including one running Windows 11—provided the new hardware meets Windows 11’s system requirements.

Here are a few key points to keep in mind:

OEM licenses are typically locked to the first device they’re activated on and cannot be transferred.

Retail licenses can be moved to a new device, but only one device can be activated at a time.

After upgrading to Windows 10 Pro with a retail key, you’ll be eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 11, assuming your hardware supports it.

When migrating to a new machine, you may need to reactivate Windows manually using your retail product key.

To check Windows 11 compatibility, I recommend using the PC Health Check tool, which will confirm whether your new machine meets the necessary requirements.

Hello trackhawk, I am Henry and I want to share my insight about your concern

When you apply a retail Windows 10 Pro key to your PC, it replaces the OEM license. From then on, your activation is tied to the retail key — which is transferable to a new machine.

    Step 1: Upgrade Current PC

    1. Apply the new Windows 10 Pro retail key to your current PC.
    2. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Activation and confirm it says “Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account.” This link is crucial for transfer later.

    Step 2: Activate New PC

    1. Install Windows 11 Pro on your new machine. When asked for a key, choose “I don’t have a product key.”
    2. After setup, sign in with the same Microsoft account used on your old PC.
    3. Go to Settings > System > Activation. If it shows not activated, run the Activation Troubleshooter.
    4. Select “I recently changed hardware on this device” and pick your old PC from the list. Windows will then activate your new PC with the retail license.

This process transfers your retail license to the new PC. The old PC will no longer have Pro activated, but the new one will be fully licensed for Windows 11 Pro.

I hope this information is helpful.
