Trying to upgrade Win 11 Pro to 24h2 from 23h2 - system says "Managed by your organization"

Seeing that Windows 11Pro 23h2 goes out of update support in November, I wanted to update to 24h2 but I never got the update offer in Windows Update. My PC is a Dell 8970 I-7 w/32GB Ram and certainly meets Microsoft's requirements. However, when trying to use the Windows 11 assistant, it forces a PC Health Check sequence. Running that sequence generates the message that "My PC is managed by my organization." This PC is not part of any organization's asset pool. I purchased it outright direct from Dell.

What is the workaround to facilitate getting this update?

    Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Q&A community. I understand your concern about the upcoming end-of-service for Windows 11, version 23H2, and the difficulty you are having updating to 24H2.

Here is a brief explanation and the recommended workarounds for both issues:

    1. Status of the Windows 11 24H2 Update

The reason Windows Update is not offering you version 24H2 is that it has not yet been released to the general public for broad deployment.

Windows 11 version 23H2 will continue to receive cumulative (security) updates until its scheduled end of service in November 2024. You will automatically receive the 24H2 update through Windows Update closer to, or just before, that deadline. There is no immediate security risk to your PC.

    2. Workaround for "Managed by Organization" Error

The error message, "Your PC is managed by your organization," typically indicates that policies or account links intended for enterprise devices are still present on your system, even if you bought the PC retail.

Check these locations to remove potential organizational links:

Check for Linked Accounts: Go to Settings > Accounts > Access work or school.

If you see any listed account (other than your personal Microsoft Account), select it and choose Disconnect.

Check Device Encryption/Health: Sometimes, organizational errors are caused by conflicting device management policies applied by previous software. Ensure your Windows license is correctly activated as a standard Retail or OEM key.

If the management setting persists and prevents you from using the Update Assistant, the most reliable way to upgrade when 24H2 is available will be through the Media Creation Tool or ISO file.

    Recommended Path (Future Upgrade):

Once Microsoft formally releases the 24H2 ISO later this year, you can bypass the Update Assistant entirely by using the ISO file to perform an in-place upgrade. This method rarely triggers the PC Health Check management prompt.
