I'm getting this message after it tells me the Office setup can't be installed: “This product cannot be installed on the selected update channel. Contact your system administrator and try again.” What should I do? I've been without Office for a long time because of this. I only have one officially licensed Office account, and it's the university one. Furthermore, I got the setup from the official Microsoft website and uninstalled the version I already had. Moreover, I've also tried installing multiple versions, but it's not working. I tried contacting someone at the university who could resolve the issue, but I wasn't successful. So, I'm looking to resolve the issue directly with Microsoft, if possible.

    Hi JUAN PABLO RECIO LOPEZ

Thank you for posting your question in Microsoft Q&A regarding the difficulties you are experiencing while installing Microsoft Office with your university license.

The error you encountered often appears when there are remnants of a previous installation still present on the system, which can interfere with a new setup. To resolve this, I recommend beginning with a complete removal of any prior Office components using the Microsoft Office Uninstall Support Tool. This tool ensures that all residual files and registry entries are cleared, going beyond the standard uninstall process. You can download it directly from our support page here:

Uninstall Office from a PC – Microsoft Support

Once you have run the tool, please restart your computer. After restarting, sign in with your university account at https://portal.office.com and download Office from the “Install Office” option available in the portal. This installation package is specifically matched to your account and should prevent any conflicts with the update channel associated with your license.

When you log in with your university account, do you actually see the “Install Office” button, or is it missing/greyed out? That will determine whether your license is standard self-installable or strictly IT-managed.

If the button is missing/greyed out, or if installation from there still fails - that means your university may have IT-managed (controlled) licenses. In that case, the installer from the public Microsoft site will almost always conflict

If you see an Install Office apps button, download from there. That download is tied directly to your license settings, so it usually avoids channel mismatches. Even after downloading, the error message “cannot be installed on the selected update channel” still appears. Please let me know thoughts in the comments section.

I hope this information is helpful.
