Unable to Attach word Documents to Assignments

I am unable to attach documents to my assignments in 4 of my 6 classes. The strange thing is that it works in two of them and the settings aren't different. I can't reuse assignments from other classes where posting is working. When I try to upload a document, it says "There was a problem attaching this file. Please remove and try again."

Let me know why this may be.

    Hi @Nathanael O'Reilly,

Thank you for posting your question on Microsoft Q&A Community. We're happy to help you with your concern.

Based on your descriptions, here are some possible reasons why you're encountering the 'There was a problem attaching this file' error when submitting assignments in Microsoft Teams.

    1. Permissions or SharePoint Sync issues
      • Each class in Teams is backed by a SharePoint site. If the SharePoint site has permission issues or is locked, file uploads may fail - even if settings appear identical across classes.
    2. Corrupted or incompatible files
      • Even simple Word documents can trigger errors if they contain unsupported elements or metadata. Some users found that the issue follows the user, not the file or device.
    3. Teams Client vs. Web App
      • Sometimes, the desktop app fails while the web version works. This suggests a client-side issue.
    4. Storage quotas or site configuration
      • If the SharePoint or OneDrive storage quota is exceeded, uploads may silently fail.
    5. Network or security software conflicts
      • VPNs, firewalls, or antivirus software can block uploads. Try disabling them temporarily to test.

You can try these suggestions to fix it:

    1. Try Uploading via Teams Web

    • Go to teams.microsoft.com
    • Attempt the upload from the browser.
    • If it works, the issue is likely with the desktop app.

    2. Upload via SharePoint directly

    • In Teams, go to the class > Files tab > click Open in SharePoint.
    • Navigate to the folder for the assignment and upload the file there.
    • Then attach it from SharePoint in the assignment.

    3. Clear Cache or Reinstall Teams

    • Clear Teams cache:
      • Quit Teams.
      • Delete contents of %appdata%\Microsoft\Teams\Cache.
    • Or reinstall the Teams app.

    4. Check storage quota

    • Ask your admin to check if your OneDrive or SharePoint site has hit its storage limit.

    5. Contact your IT/Admin

    • Ask them to check Teams policies in the Microsoft Teams Admin Center.
    • If no policy is causing it, they should open a support ticket via the Microsoft 365 Admin Center.
    • Ticket Support: In the Microsoft 365 Admin Center>Support>Help & Support. You can raise support ticket at https://admin.microsoft.com/#/support/requests

If you need any further assistance, feel free to reach out. We're here to help. Thank you very much for your understanding and your cooperation.
