Got this message today.

What do I need to do now to get ready? Will there be a migration tool (or some kind of easy way to transition over)?

Downtime is no issue, just want to make sure that it is a simple enough transition keeping the same External IP address on the gateway.

The retirement date for Basic VPN Gateway using Basic SKU public IP addresses is 31 January 2026. This date gives you time to plan and complete your migration with minimal disruption. The previously announced retirement date of 30 September 2025 for Basic SKU public IP addresses doesn't apply to your Basic VPN Gateway.

I have a VPN configured with the Basic SKU, and the public IP address associated with this VPN is a dynamic public IP. Currently, I do not yet have access to the migration tool to migrate this VPN.

Could you please confirm whether I should wait until the migration tool becomes available, or if there is an alternative method to migrate it?

There is no action needed at this time since you have Basic SKU VPN Gateway.

The latest update published today states, in regards to Basic SKU VPN Gateway:

Your actual IP address will not change, and connectivity will not be interrupted.

An automated capability to remove the Basic public IP from your gateway will be available in Sept/Oct 2025

Deprecation timeline of Basic IP for all VPN Gateways is moved from Sep 2025 to end of Jan 2026

Because Microsoft is retiring Basic public IP resources, we’re updating the Basic VPN Gateway construct. You’ll see the Basic public IP reference as an attribute on your virtual network gateway.

If you have scripts, ARM templates, or monitoring solutions that reference the Basic public IP resource, update them to use the IP address property of the virtual network gateway instead.

I'm not completely clear on the implications of this retirement. I have a Basic VPN gateway that uses a public IP address that uses the Basic SKU.

Will this public IP address need to be upgraded to the Standard SKU before the end of January 2026 or can I leave it as it is?

If the upgrade is required, what is the difference in pricing?

Do you have any steps or Microsoft supporting documents how to carry out this migration.
I am getting menu buttons for Gateway SKU migration as per the attached screenshot. even i reconfirmed that, the public IP is standard one.

I am using Basic Generation 1 SKU gateway with a Basic Public IP. I don't see any options in my portal.

@Thomson Lo You are on Basic SKU VPN Gateway, which is different than what @Naik, Siddesh is using.

In your case, the automated tool for removing Basic SKU IP address is supposed to be released in October 2025, so it makes sense you don't see any options.

In your question, please make sure to list your current VPN Gateway SKU and Gateway type. You can find SKU and gateway type on the Overview blade in portal, so if you want to post screenshot of Overview it would be helpful. Include the screenshot you posted above was well.

From your screenshot it appears you are referring to the ExpressRoute gateway SKU migration.
