Microsoft Defender for Android as a managed app, won't connect to VPN since update.

We have several hundred android users, all using Microsoft Defender. We have a managed configuration policy for this, allowing several options within the app. What is not working now, is the VPN Setup for Defender. The app config policy has the VPN component "approved", however it now states in the defender app on the Android devices, that VPN Setup is incomplete. I try to complete the setup by clicking on the "Allow VPN" button, and I am presented with a [Microsoft Defender: "VPN Setup" is required permission.] message, with no recourse I can see to approve it from the device.

    Hi James,

Thank you for posting on the forum today. I’m Bambi, a user like you and I’ll be happy to assist you.

I’m sorry to hear that you are having trouble with the VPN setup for Microsoft Defender on your Android devices.

This may have been caused by the update like you pointed out. You can find a similar issue here https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/microsoft-defender-for-endpoint/ms-defender-app-on-android-device-with-vpn-causing-connection/m-p/3713635?ssp=1&setlang=en-GB&safesearch=moderate

From your description, it appears you use a work/school account. I’ll suggest you contact the business unit for best assistance. They can tell you if it’s a glitch in the update and/or provide a workaround while the issue is being addressed. To do this, kindly sign in to the admin center https://admin.microsoft.com to raise a ticket that needs to be submitted by the Admin representative of the company account.

Describe the issue and chose how you will like to be contacted either via email or call. An agent will reach out to help you resolve the issue.

Let me know if there’s anything else I can help you with.

    Best Regards, Bambi
