Hi we Iare having trouble trying to gain access and removing a staff member from our teams account who is no longer working with us. This person was a previous owner of a team and it keeps giving us an error message:

we don’t want to delete a team just the member.

Hello Elissa Brown (Elissa Brown ),

Good day!Thank you for posting to Microsoft Community. We are happy to help you.

First, ensure that you or another current team member has been promoted to "Owner" in the team. Only owner can remove the member in team. In the Teams app, navigate to the team, go to Manage Team > Members tab, and make someone else an owner if needed. If this isn't possible, you can ask your admin or IT department to promote another member as owner or you and remove the previous owner. This can be done in the Teams admin center with steps below.

    1. Log into the teams admin center
    2. Navigate to Users >Manage users >Select this user account.
    3. Select teams to show the teams that the user is part of and select the team.

    1. Once you select the team >select channels >Identify the private channel and open it.
    2. From here, they can promote another member to owner and remove the previous one.

Once there is another owner, try removing the former employee again.

We look forward to your reply. This requested information will help us narrow down the scenario and find the right troubleshooting. We will continue to assist you based on the information you provide. I sincerely appreciate your patience and cooperation.   SincerelyEben Ezer Tres | Microsoft Community Moderator
