Teams Update Problems

Recently, every time I open Teams using Microsoft, the app always shows: 'Classic Teams will soon be unavailable, but due to org policy, we couldn't update you to the new Teams. Starting July 1, 2025, classic Teams will no longer be available for use. Contact your IT department for more info. To experience the new Teams, you can try it out on the web. Learn about installation issues'

As the message said, for some reason, I couldn't download the new teams in any way, I've tried multiple platforms but it isn't working. But I loathe using the web as an alternative, as the controls are a bit different and the whole custamisation is different to the app. I can't get used to the web. Additionally, our schools photos of the years have already changed, but I can't see the changes, and nor can I recieve new messages anymore. Is there any way I can use Teams normal again? Or perhaps there are alternatives?

    Dear Matthew Zhuang,

Good day! Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Support Community and sharing the issue you're experiencing with Microsoft Teams. I understand how important it is to have a consistent and reliable platform for your daily communication, and I’m here to help guide you through this situation.

    1. Understand What the Message Means

When you open Microsoft Teams and see:

“Classic Teams will soon be unavailable, but due to org policy, we couldn't update you to the new Teams. Starting July 1, 2025, classic Teams will no longer be available for use.”

This message is letting you know that Microsoft will retire the older version of Teams (called “Classic Teams”) on July 1, 2025. After that date, only the new Teams experience will be supported.

However, your organization’s current settings (called “org policy”) are preventing the upgrade. This is something only your IT department can adjust.

    2. Why You Can’t Upgrade Yet

Even though you’ve tried to download the new Teams on different platforms, the upgrade is blocked by your organization’s policy. This means that even manual installation won’t work until your IT team updates your permissions.

    3. Use the Web Version Temporarily (Optional)

You can access the new Teams experience through your browser at https://teams.microsoft.com. This version is always up to date and can help you stay connected.

We understand that the web version feels different and may not offer the same customization or comfort as the desktop app. That’s why we recommend this only as a temporary solution.

    4. Contact Your IT Department

To resolve the issue permanently, your IT team needs to update your Teams policy settings.
    5. What Your IT Team Should Do

Your IT team can resolve this by:

    1. Opening the Microsoft Teams Admin Center
    2. Navigating to Teams Update Policies
    3. Ensuring your account is not set to “AdminDisabled”
    4. Assigning the correct policy that allows the upgrade to the new Teams experience

Once this is done, you’ll be able to use the new Teams app normally.

    6. Confirm the Fix

After your IT team updates the settings:

    • Restart your device
    • Open Microsoft Teams again
    • You should now be able to use the new version with full functionality

Moreover, the issue with not seeing updated school photos or receiving new messages is likely caused by the outdated version of Teams. Once you’re upgraded, these features should work as expected.

If you've tried these steps and the issue persists, please let me know. I’d be happy to assist further or escalate the issue to our technical team if needed.

    Best regards,

    Dear Nicky,

Good day! Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Support Community. I understand you’re trying to use Microsoft Teams on your personal Mac after leaving your previous organization, and I’m here to help you get that working smoothly.

Here’s a quick step-by-step guide to reset Teams and sign in with your new workplace account:

    1. Sign Out of Teams
      • Open Teams, click your profile picture, and select Sign out.
      • Quit Teams completely by right-clicking the icon in the dock and choosing Quit.
    2. Clear Old Data
      • Open Finder, press Command + Shift + G, and go to:
        ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft
        Delete the Teams folder.
      • Then go to:
        ~/Library/Caches
Delete any folders related to Microsoft Teams.
    3. Remove Saved Credentials
      • Open Keychain Access (search in Spotlight).
      • Search for Microsoft Teams and delete any saved entries from your old organization.
    4. Reinstall Teams
    5. Sign In with Your New Account
      • Open Teams and sign in using your new workplace email.

Once these steps are complete, Teams should open with your new organization’s environment and work as expected.

If you need help with any step or run into any messages along the way, just let me know. I’ll be happy to assist further.

    Warm regards,

    Greetings,

I'm having the same issue, on my personal Mac. I no longer work for the organization I was logged into. I have gone through and deleted all catches so I can sign into my new workplace Teams, on my personal Mac, so I don't have to carry 2 laptops when I'm away for personal reasons. Is there a way to correct this?

    Thank you.

    Nicky
