Hello

I am trying to open .docx files from the Teams application using the Word App. However every time I do that, the file opens in Read-Only mode. Is there a way to open it in Editor mode? I would like to work on the file and update it on Teams.

Thanks

Hello Murtaza, My name is Indhurani, I’ll be happy to help you today.

To meet your requirement, since these files are stored on the same name SharePoint site, you need to contact the site owner/admin, and let them set the option“Require documents to be checked out before they can be edited“to Yes via Library Settings> Versioning settings. After that, when users open files that are stored in the library, the file is opened in View/read-only mode.

    >>Also, you can try the below trick and check if it is working

Open the file in the Word app and then select "Edit" from the File menu. This will allow you to edit the document and save your changes back to Teams.

    Hello Indhurani

I want to be able to open the file in editable mode and not in read-only mode. I am the owner of the Teams group and have access to the settings you described. I checked a couple of options but the file still opens in the 'read-only' mode when I access it using the Word app on the desktop (see snapshot).

I am able to edit the .docx file on Teams, but I'd like to work on it through the desktop app. Can you please suggest something else?

    Thank you

Thank you for sharing the screenshot!

You may try the following and check if it is working

To do this, open the .docx file from Teams in the Word app, click on File > Info > Protect Document > Restrict Editing, then select No Restrictions from the drop-down menu. This should allow you to open and edit the file in Editor mode.

Thanks for your reply. This is what I get.

Clicking on Resolve doesn't fix anything

    Sorry to know that:)

If you are the owner of the Teams group and have access to the settings, then you should be able to configure the settings so that the file opens in editable mode. You can do this by navigating to the Advanced Settings section in the file's SharePoint library, and then check the box for 'Open in edit mode'. Once you have done this, the file should open in editable mode when you access it using the Word app on the desktop. Additionally, you can also assign specific permissions to different users, or groups of users, to determine who can open the file in editable mode.
