English to Portuguese (Portugal) translation is not accurate, but closely matching with Portuguese (Brazil)

We found Azure Translator provides very poor translations, especially when translating from English -> Portuguese (Portugal) because the response is much closer to Portuguese (Brazil) not Portuguese (Portugal).

The following is an example:
English: I'm taking the bus tomorrow. Can you give me a ride today?

Portuguese (Portugal) [response from Azure]``: Vou pegar o ônibus amanhã. Você pode me dar uma carona hoje?

ônibus” in particular is very very Brazilian. A European Portuguese person would not use this word, they would say “autocarro”.

Please do you want to give us an update when are you going to fix this?

    Ola !

Thank you for posting on Microsoft Learn Q&A.

As far as I know Azure Translator by default treats pt as brazilian portuguese which is why you’re seeing that and if you want european portuguese you set the target locale to pt-PT explicitly and not pt only as it defaults to pt-br https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/ai-services/translator/language-support

If you are using the text API translator, the category parameter stays general unless you use a custom translator model.https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/api/azure.ai.translation.text.texttranslationtranslateoptions
