How to create a Negative Keyword List on the Manager Account Level - so that I could apply the list across campaigns in different accounts under the Mangaer Account

Hi folks,

I would like to get some help with creating negative keyword lists.

I have a manager account with several sub-accounts (not sure if that’s the correct term). I want to set up a negative keyword list that can be applied across multiple campaigns, which are spread across these sub-accounts. My initial thought was to create a negative keyword list at the manager account level and then include the campaigns in the list. However, whenever I go to Tools > Negative Keyword Lists, it directs me to a specific sub-account.

Does this mean that negative keyword lists cannot be created at the manager account level? I’m concerned that manually adding the same negative keyword list to each individual sub-account will be very time-consuming.

I’d appreciate any insights or advice you can offer. Thank you in advance!

Hello Yifan Ouyang,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Advertising Community Forum! My name is Marvin, and I will be assisting you with this query.

I understand that you want to reduce the time spent adding negative keywords to each account you manage, so you can focus on other tasks and better manage your time. Currently, we don’t have a feature for this, as negative keywords are unique search terms that vary based on your business model, your client’s intents and signals for triggering your ads, and your keywords and its match types.

As you know, we can add your negative keywords manually at the account (sub-account), campaign, ad group, and keyword levels. The good news is that you can suggest adding the feature to include your Negative Keyword List at the Manager Account (MCM) level, allowing you to associate it with different sub-accounts. Please click this link, Microsoft Advertising Feature Suggestions, to submit a feature suggestion.

For now, you may add your negative keywords at the account level. This list is applied to Search, Shopping, and Performance Max campaigns associated with your account and supplements the keywords you add to individual campaigns and ad groups. You can create one list at the account level that contains up to 1,000 negative keywords. Kindly see the steps below for your reference:

  1. From the navigation menu on the left, hover over Campaignsand select SettingsAccount level options.
  2. Below Negative keywords, select Add negative keywords.
  3. Add your negative keywords as phrase match or exact match.
  4. Select Save.

For the steps of adding negative keywords at the campaign or ad group level, please see steps below:

  1. From the navigation menu on the left, hover over Campaignsand select KeywordsNegative keywords.
  2. Select Campaignor Ad group.
  3. Select Add negative keywords.
  4. Select the appropriate campaign or ad group, then add your negative keywords as appropriate.
  5. Select Save.
