Any one having issue changing match types for keywords in Bing Ads?

We have been having issues with the performance of our ads. While researching that we noticed a few things on Bing Ads

  1. The keywords on keyword listing doesn't highlight match type similar to Google Adwords. You have to add a separate "Match Type" column which is not a default column.
  2. If you select a keyword and then from Edit selection, go to "change match types", it always shows that your keyword is set as a Broad match type even though match type field shows it to be phrase / exact match type. Because of this inconsistency, we cannot determine what is the actual match type for any keyword.

3) After you change match type (ex: broad to exact), change doesn't get saved (tested on IE and Chrome). This prevents from changing match types.

We have reached out to Bing Ads customer service and they have reproduced the problem.

We haven't tested ads yet, but there is no guarantee that ads could be running as expected using proper match types. Match type is very significant for ad performance and if there is a glitch in the software than it could be affecting a wider audience and not just our account. Has anyone else experienced this issue?

Hi Priscilla,

There are three issues here...most critical one is that when you try to change match type for a single keyword or multiple keywords, site doesn't save the changes...so you are stuck with the previous match type and only way around is to delete and re-add keyword with the desired match type. This was tested and confirmed to be an issue by a Bing support person when we were on live chat with them. Besides, "change match types" section always defaulting to "Broad" match type for the selected keyword (even if that keyword could be set as exact or phrase) is a defect. It should show actual match type for the selected keyword. Third issue which is mainly a what-makes-sense functionality is to by default showing match type of each keyword on the keyword list. Google Adwords does that by showing quotes around exact match keywords or brackets around phrase match keywords.

Hope this explains issues better to you.

Thanks.

    Hi Inovoto,

Yes I have tried to test out your request. The system is set to default to broad it does not reset it self when you choose the keywords you would like to change. What I agree on is that is a great feature suggestions where we can request that the system default change when choosing for example all phrase or all exacts and so forth.

Do to the large amount of keywords most customers may have if a client wanted to change all there keywords from broad to phrase or exact it is easier to select all and only change what is under broad to phrase and avoid to have to filter them. Hi Priscilla,

Even if you try to change match type of an existing keyword, it defaults match type to Broad (even if the keyword's actual match type is Exact or Phrase). Have you tried this yourself? Also, the main issue is that even if you try to change a keyword's match type, changes are not saved. This is a defect.

    Thanks.

    Hi Invoto,

Thank you for the reply. We have confirmed with our team and for what we can trouble shoot the tool is behaving as it's designed. The option to change match types in bulk will default to broad.  The Bing Ads Feature Suggestion Forum is an easily accessible site to propose ideas and feature requests.

Suggestions captured in this forum will be constantly reviewed and assessed for consideration to further enrich the capabilities of the search marketing platform as a request you may visit the Bing Ads Feature Suggestion Forum: http://microsoftadvertising.uservoice.com

I do have a question regarding keyword list, is it the negative keyword list? If it is you can go to Share Library and chose "create negative keyword list" and you should see the information [Keyword] =Exact match negative keyword or "Keyword" =Phrase match negative keyword.

    Hi Invoto,

Thank you for contacting Bing Ads Support.  What I would  recommend is if you have large amount of keywords you may select them all, then select the edit button for "change match types" if you are looking to change all your phrase match types to exact only those with Phrase will change to exact. If you want to change your Broad Match types to a combination of phrase or exact click on "match types" to arrange al the Match typed together and select the ones that you would like to go from broad to phrase and the same process for the broads being changed to exact. The system will always default to broad when you select that option.

Another way you may make changes to Bids & match types is by is selecting the keywords being changes then under edit chose " Edit selected rows" once you change the 1st match type beside it when the mouse is placed by the selection a sticky note will appear for copy to all selected rows.
