How can I recover my word files if I cannot open them because it said the app has been updated

I made a file with my Word documents, but I cannot open any of them because it says the app has been updated.

    What does the message say, specifically? If it says something along the lines that Office has updated, you should be able to click OK to confirm and then open your document.
