The impact on existing recovery points largely depends on how the backup solution handles the transition between policies. Generally, recovery points taken before the policy change should remain unaffected unless the new policy specifically alters retention or cleanup behavior. To avoid unintended loss of old recovery points, ensure that retention and cleanup settings are aligned with your data protection strategy. Existing recovery points from the previous policy will remain intact until they either fall outside the new retention period or are manually removed.

Example of Policy Change Impact

Old Policy: You have a policy with a retention period of 1 year for daily backups.

New Policy: You change the policy to retain backups for only 3 months and back up every 4 hours instead of daily.

Impact:

All future backups will be taken every 4 hours, and only the last 3 months of backups will be retained.

Any old recovery points (from more than 3 months ago) will be removed during the cleanup process according to the new retention policy.

Recovery points from the last 3 months will still be available for restore, as they fall within the new retention window. Please let me know if you face any challenge here, I can help you to resolve this issue further
