Email Notifications Not Triggered in Microsoft Purview Data Quality Alerts

Hi all,
I'm working with Microsoft Purview Data Quality (DQ) and have successfully configured custom rules and thresholds. The rules are evaluating correctly, and when a DQ breach occurs (e.g., quality score drops below the threshold), I can see that an action is created in the "Actions" tab of the DQ actions.

However, I am not receiving any email notifications when the quality score drops below the defined threshold.

Here’s what I’ve already checked:

  • user is added under the Notification Recipients section while creating/editing the rule.
  • Thresholds (like 80%) are properly set.
  • Rule is being triggered, and actions are created as expected.
  • I’m using an Azure trial subscription — not sure if this limits email notification capabilities?
  • My Purview account was upgraded to tenant-level, but still under the free credit model ($200 Azure trial).

My Questions:

  1. Is there a known limitation with email alerts for users under Azure free/trial subscription?
  2. Are there any additional settings or configurations needed (e.g., Azure Monitor, email service registration)?

Would really appreciate any insight from the community or Microsoft team. Thank you!

    Hi @Neeraja Kesarla

Azure free/trial subscriptions are not eligible for limit or quota increases, which may include restrictions on certain notification features like email alerts. While specific documentation for Microsoft Purview Data Quality (DQ) email alerts under a trial subscription is not explicitly detailed, general Azure trial limitations suggest that full functionality, including notifications, might require a paid tier or additional configuration that may not be fully enabled in a trial environment. Upgrading to a pay-as-you-go subscription is often recommended to access all features.

Email notifications in Microsoft Purview may require additional configurations. This can include setting up Azure Monitor Action Groups to send emails, ensuring an email service or relay (e.g., Azure Logic Apps or SMTP relay) is configured, and verifying that the recipient's email domain is not blocked by tenant policies. You should also check that the Purview account is integrated with Azure Monitor for alert management and that diagnostic settings are properly configured to route notifications.

I hope this information helps. Please do let us know if you have any further queries.
