Purview Scan On-Prem File Server

 Self-hosted Integration Runtime (SHIR) cannot be used to scan on-premises file servers with Microsoft Purview. Instead, you should use the Microsoft Purview Information Protection scanner, which is specifically designed to scan, classify, and protect files stored on network shares using SMB or NFS protocols.
Steps to set up the Information Protection scanner:
Install the Information Protection Scanner: This scanner runs as a service on a Windows Server. You need to install and configure it to connect to your on-premises file servers.
Configure Sensitivity Labels: Use the Microsoft Purview portal to configure sensitivity labels that the scanner will apply to the files it discovers.
Run the Scanner: You can run the scanner in different modes, such as discovery mode to create reports or automatic labeling mode to apply labels based on the configured policies.

If you specifically need to use SHIR, consider syncing your on-premises file server data to Azure Files , Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2, or Blob Storage. This way, you can leverage SHIR for scanning while still managing your on-premises data.

My files are Excel files. If I use the Microsoft Purview Information Protection scanner, will I have the same capabilities as I do when the files are stored in Azure Files? For example, with files in Azure Files, I can register Azure Files as a data source in the Data Map, and after a Purview scan, I can view the Excel file schema in the Purview Data Catalog. Is this also possible with the Microsoft Purview Information Protection scanner?

The Microsoft Purview Information Protection scanner can classify and label Excel files on an on-premises file server, but it does not provide the same capabilities as scanning Azure Files with SHIR. Specifically, it cannot register on-premises file shares in the Purview Data Map or extract and catalog schema details (e.g., column names) in the Data Catalog. To achieve schema extraction and Data Catalog integration, sync your Excel files to Azure Files (or another supported Azure storage service) and scan them using Purview’s data source scanning capabilities.

Hi, once this is not supported, we will check with customer about sync files with Azure Files.
