this error keeps popping up on a windows 2000 machine that runs a piece of equipment that we can not upgrade the pc for. any help on what is now causing this error?

The error code 0x80040005 occurs when Windows cannot access a file or folder. Please make ensure that you have configured the correct permissions. If you have antivirus running on the machine you can disable it temporarily to see if the issue persists.

0x80040005 is E_FAIL - unspecified error. It requires context to understand. To determine a cause requires knowing what exactly returned E_FAIL.

Unable to access a file or folder would be E_ACCESSDENIED: 0x80070005

only other thing it says on error page is Unspecified Error.

I was hoping the numbers were a road map to where the issue was. so anychnace of getting pointed in a geneal direction where to try to find what is causing this error.

Check the system and application event logs for additional error events. Try to identify the process that is crashing.

ok will try that.

i think it may have to do with a scsi card that is in the system. would that make sense at all?

seems like if i disconnect that device it doesnt kick up the error

I have no idea what might cause that error.

Sooner or later something is going to break on old equipment.

If your business relies on that old PC then you might want to try to convince management that it's way past time to replace that hardware.

I swapped out the SCSI card and it has not shown the error in 2 days so hopefully thats what it was.
