Using Remote Desktop, without the Internet

Hello, Right now I have two computers connected to a wireless router. This router is not connected to the internet.PC1: Is a laptop running windows 7 professional. It is connected to the router wirelessly.PC2: is a desktop computer running windows XP professional. It is connected to a ethernet hub which is then connected to the router directly. The ethernet hub is also connected to several other devices including external hard drives.I would like to be able to use remote desktop to access PC2 from PC1. I am wondering if this is possible due to the lack of internet connection. I have been following the steps at: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-CA/windows7/allow-remote-desktop-connections-from-outside-your-home-network However, these steps seems to require internet access at some point. I think I am up to the point where it states "open a web browser and type the internal IP address of your router. This address will usually be 192.168.1.1, 192.168.0.1, or 192.168.2.1."I am assume this is possible and should be a pretty straight-forward setup. Is there a third party software I could install on my computers to make this easier?Any advice would be appreciated!-Andrew

    Hi Andrew,

You don’t need internet connection to use remote desktop connection. I would suggest you to refer to the following article instead of the one you are using as that has steps to connect to a computer outside home network. But, your computers are in the same network.

Connect to another computer using Remote Desktop Connection

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-in/windows/connect-using-remote-desktop-connection#connect-using-remote-desktop-connection=windows-7

Let us know about the status of the issue. We would be happy to help you.

The best choice for that would be UltraVNC.

    http://www.uvnc.com/downloads/ultravnc.html

It is free. You install the server on the computer that you want to control and use the viewer to access it either by directly typing the IP address of the computer to be controlled or you can use the UNC path \yourcomputernamehere

It isn’t too hard to set up.

    Regards

    David

I have a question. Why do you not need Internet connection for Remote Desktop? How is it possible to access a computer without an Internet connection?

Because if the pc you are trying to remote into is in the same vacinity then a patch lead can be used to link the two. Usually for industrial pc's or remote offices or farms.
