Windows 11 Pro 24H2 will not boot after enabling Hyper-V

Just upgraded from Windows 11 Home to Pro. I want to enable Hyper-V on my PC. I have verified that it does support it via "msinfo32". My PC is a Dell Inspiron 5593, Intel Core i5 10th Gen with 16GB of memory.

After Hyper-V installs and reboots, my brand new upgrade will not boot. The only way to recover was to restore the PC which I did. Then tried Hyper-V again, same result. Have attempted to search Google for solutions without much success. There has to be a Microsoft process for resolving this issue.

I have this problem and could not solve it.
However instead of having to restore the PC, I was able to recover by rebooting in safe mode.
When I did that, it detected the update to enable Hyper-V (and previously Sandbox) in the same way it detects an update or feature-pack update failure and reverted back to having the Hyper-V/Sandbox turned off.

Hope this added information lessens panic after the system goes into a boot loop, trying to repair and avoids having to do a restore from backup.

Hi Jack,

Go into the bios and tell us what settings there are under advanced? Not much information regarding this in the Dell manual.

I run Hyper-V on three computers.

Thanks for answering back, I had a Dell Precision Laptop at work and I ran Hyper-V all the time when I was testing applications, however it was on Windows 10. Since retiring 5 years ago, I have not had a need for Hyper-V until now, hence my upgrading my Windows 11 from Home to PRO. My BIOS settings are below. The only way I can get my PC to boot after installing Hyper-V is to use BCDedit and /set hypervisorlaunchtype Off

This allows me to boot, but Hyper-V will not start my virtual machine complaining that Hypervisor is not running. If I go back to BCDedit and look at the setting, windows has changed it to Auto (see below) and then my PC will not boot again. When I do get it to boot again, things surrounding the Task Bar do not work at all, like "Settings". At this point, I have restored my PC from the install disk 3 times. I'm ready to say forget about it and install Broadcom's VMware.

Hi, Sorry missed your comment.

Are you using Hyper-V Generation 2, if so make sure Secure Boot is enabled and I have TPM enabled as well in the bios.

These are the only settings I use for Hyper-V, I also run Sandbox but don't try until Hyper-V is working.

If you still have trouble I will tell you my bios settings on SP7, and my two other computers. SP7 is very basic in the bios, abit like the Dell bios.

Have you got any other software like VMware or VirtualBox installed as these will cause conflict?

Use the following in PowerShell to check it is enabled

Get-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName Microsoft-Hyper-V-All
