Have you tried to directly upgrade SQL Server without the 3rd party tool?
Will it throw the error?

We use a 3rd party application to install/upgrade sql server on client PC.
But it is throwing an exception stated above.Detail.txt
What I am trying: Upgrade SQL Server from 2012 to 2016 SP3 using 3rd party installer.
Here I am attaching the Detail log file, please have a look and help me resolve this issue. TIA.

2024-11-21T06:56:29.9466667+00:00 I just realized that I was using wrong SQL Server edition, for us it should be SQL Server 2014 & 2016 Express edition. I have downloaded the setup from

Few years back other developer implemented double upgrade from 2008R2 to 2014R2. n top of this, now I am trying to upgrade to SQL Server Express 2014 SP3 and failing with below error "The Instance ID 'MixLogic' is already in use by SQL Server instance 'MIXLOGIC'. The error message suggests that you are trying to run a new install.
It is not clear to me: Is this a third-party installer, or is actually a second-party installer? That is, is this an installer you got from a vendor, or are you working for the vendor of the installer?

2024-12-16T22:24:04.4833333+00:00 It would have helped if you had said from the beginning that you are actually working with the installer yourself. From your initial post, I thought you were actually running something someone else had cobbled together.
Anyway, we still don't know what you are doing inside that installer. I've never implemented a setup program that installs SQL Server (or any other sort of setup program for that matter), but if I would do it, my first idea would to run an unattended install. Is that what you are doing?

And then it goes on to list a number of options - including
Upgrade. Certainly a bit confusing.But if you are running a third-party installer that runs the upgrade, you need to talk to the vendor. We don't know what that installer is doing.
Then again, why not run the normal install package for SQL 2016?
(And why SQL 2016, a version that is out of mainstream support?)
