How to Get a Unified View of Virtual Machines and VMSS in Azure Portal?

Hi everyone,

I’m currently managing both Virtual Machines and Virtual Machine Scale Sets (VMSS) in the Azure Portal. While I have good visibility over these resources individually, they’re displayed separately, which makes it a bit confusing when I want to see the total number of VMs across my entire environment.

I’m wondering if there’s any way to get a more unified view that consolidates both standalone Virtual Machines and VMSS instances for easier management. If anyone has suggestions or knows of any features that could help, I’d be grateful for the advice.

To get a more unified view of your Virtual Machines and Virtual Machine Scale Sets (VMSS) in the Azure Portal, you can use VM insights. VM insights provides a global view of your VMs and their dependencies. You can access VM insights for all your virtual machines and virtual machine scale sets by selecting Virtual Machines from the Monitor menu in the Azure portal.

To view a map of your VMs and their dependencies, follow these steps:

In the Azure portal, select Monitor.

In the Insights section, choose Virtual Machines.

Select the Map tab.

The map visualizes all your VMs and their dependencies. You can choose a workspace by using the Workspace selector at the top of the page. If you have more than one Log Analytics workspace, choose the workspace that's enabled with the solution and that has VMs reporting to it.

The Group selector returns subscriptions, resource groups, computer groups, and Virtual Machine Scale Sets of computers that are related to the selected workspace. Your selection applies only to the Map feature and doesn't carry over to Performance or Health.

You can also access a map for a specific instance from the Instances view for your virtual machine scale set. In the Settings section, go to Instances > Insights.

I just wanted to see, you know, the VMs + VMSS together, on a sigle view.

Hi @razec18

Yes, you can look at the compute infrastructure blade in azure portal, and then click on All resources for the "Type" filter you can select both VMs and VMSS in the drop down as shown below for a list of both types.
