Hi Nigel Boothe
Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A Platform! Thank you for asking your question here.
To migrate VMware vSphere virtual machines (VMs) to Azure Stack HCI, it's essential to set up a separate Azure Migrate project specifically for this purpose. The existing Azure Migrate project configured for migrations to Azure VMs cannot be used for Azure Stack HCI migrations.
Create a New Azure Migrate Project:
You must create a new Azure Migrate project dedicated to migrating VMs from VMware to Azure Stack HCI. The existing project for Azure VMs will not support this migration type.
Use the Correct Migration Tools:
In the new Azure Migrate project, ensure that you select the appropriate tools for discovering and replicating VMware VMs specifically for Azure Stack HCI. This includes using the "Migration and Modernization Discover" page rather than the "Discovery and Assessment" page, which is not compatible with Azure Stack HCI migrations.
Requirements for Migration:
Source VMware Environment: Ensure that your VMware environment can initiate a network connection with the target Azure Stack HCI cluster. The source VMware server should have sufficient resources, including a minimum of 16 GB memory and 8 vCPUs for the Windows Server 2022 VM being created during the migration process.
Target Azure Stack HCI Environment: The target cluster must be running version 23H2 of Azure Stack HCI, and an Arc Resource Bridge must be deployed to facilitate migration.
Replication Process:
After setting up the project, you will need to onboard your discovered VMs by entering details about your Azure Stack HCI cluster. This includes domain information, username, and password
Once the discovery is complete, initiate the replication process through the Azure portal, where you can monitor the status of your replicated VMs until they are ready for migration.
