Hello,

we have a local MABS Server and some Backup files on it, now we want to test if we can do a recovery in the Azure Portal without the MABS Server.

In the Recovery Services Vault -> Backup Items Section i can select the type of data (Azure Backup Server). On the listed data sources, the pop up menu doesnt appear after clicking the dotted icon. Though it does appear in the Azure Backup vaults. We checked the permissions.

Thank you for your assistance.

    @Michael Greetings!

From the details you shared in the post, I understand that you have a MABS server on-premises, and it is backing up files. Now, you want to test recovery option. However, there is no restore option/restore items.

When you set up protection for a machine using MABS, you select to back up to the MABS local disk for short-term storage and to Azure for online protection.

In your case, I think the backups were successful to the local disk but not transferred to the vault. Because of which you are unable to find restore option.

Refer to the Azure backup server architecture - https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/backup/backup-architecture#architecture-back-up-to-dpmmabs

For restore, you follow the guidance from this link - https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/backup/backup-azure-alternate-dpm-server#recover-the-data

Hope this helps. If problem persist, then it would be great if you could share the screenshot of restore options from the Azure portal.

    Update:

When using Microsoft Azure Backup Server (MABS), backups are managed primarily through the MABS console, and recovery options are typically accessed there. Here are the key points regarding backup and recovery with MABS:

    1. MABS Console:
      • Restoring backups (files, VMs, applications) is generally done through the MABS server console. You can select the items to restore and choose the desired restore point.
    2. Azure Portal:
      • While you can monitor the status of backups in the Azure portal (e.g., checking the Recovery Services vault), the actual recovery of data backed up through MABS usually cannot be initiated directly from the Azure portal.
    3. MABS Features:
      • MABS provides specific features for recovery that are tailored to on-premises environments, such as file-level restores, application restores, and VM recovery.
    4. Use of Azure for Offsite Storage:
      • Azure acts as an offsite storage location for the backups created by MABS, providing redundancy and disaster recovery options, but the recovery process still relies on MABS for retrieval.

    Hope this clarifies!
