According to official Microsoft documentation, Microsoft OneNote free for desktop is available for all supported Windows versions. (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/what-s-the-difference-between-the-onenote-versions-a624e692-b78b-4c09-b07f-46181958118f). As it seems, OneNote free for desktop is based on Microsoft 365, like a free, reduced version, of Microsoft 365. We know that personal and home editions of Microsoft 365 are not supported on Windows Server 2022, only professional versions. On the link provided it says OneNote free for desktop is instalable on any supported Windows edition. Would this also include not just standard Windows editios, but also server or embedded editions of Windows?

My main concern is not already in support Windows Server editions, but Windows Server 2025, that seems to reach GA pretty soon. From Microsoft statements, it seems that Microsoft 365 shall be supported on it for the mainstream support period of the Windows Server editions, but it is not clearly if this is for offline installed apps or just for those that accessed remotely or an cloud. And it is not clearly if OneNote free for desktop would be available or supported on Windows Server 2025. Since the public preview of Microsoft Office 2024 does not seem to installable on WS 2025, there is a chance that Microsoft 365 apps shall not installed locally, offline. And there is also the chance that OneNote free for desktop shall be supported on WS 2025. So, my guess is that, if OneNote free for Windows desktop is supported on Windows Server 2022, there is a greater chance for it to be supported on Windows Server 2025. So this is why I ask: Is OneNote free for desktop supported on Windows Server 2022?

OneNote is primarily designed and supported for client versions of Windows, such as Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Microsoft OneNote for Windows desktop is generally not officially supported on Windows Server editions.

Hello,Thank you for posting in Microsoft Q&A.

Based on the description, I understand your question is related to OneNote on Server.

According to the official article, there are two available versions of OneNote for windows:

    • OneNote (formerly called “OneNote 2016”), the free desktop app that runs on all supported versions of Microsoft Windows and is part of Office 2019 and Microsoft 365.
    • OneNote for Windows 10, the OneNote app that is pre-installed on all editions of Windows 10.

So for windows server, maybe the first version will be suitable because it run on all supported versions of Microsoft Windows.

There is no specific information available yet about the support for OneNote free for desktop on Server 2025. Given that Microsoft 365 apps are expected to be supported on Windows Server 2025 for the mainstream support period, it is possible that OneNote free for desktop might also be supported. However, this is not confirmed and would depend on Microsoft's official announcements closer to the release date. You can keep monitor the further 2025 release.

    Have a nice day.

    Best Regards,

    Molly
